I have always been a fan of the BenQ home theater projectors after owning their W10000 HD DLP projector. This new US range of native 4K home theater projectors; the HT4550i, HT3560, TK860i and V5000i takes their range to a new level, offering; HDR upgrades, improved colors and tone mapping plus built-in streaming.
On all models except the TK860i, HDR-Pro adds support for the premium HDR10+ format together with HDR10 and HLG, while on all four models HDR-Pro adds Local Contrast Enhancement and HDR Tone Mapping. This latest version of their optimized tone mapping separates the scene into over 1000 zones in order to optimize gamma levels in each zone independently of others, which BenQ claims to enhance and preserve details in both bright highlights and shadowy scenes.
Color also gets a boost with BenQ’s CinematicColour system aiming to achieve the director’s original vision approach. BenQ claims that these new projectors conform to 100% Rec.709 HDTV color space as well as the DCI-P3 digital filmmaking color gamut.
The HT4550i, TK860i and the V5000i ship with the Google-certified Android TV platform and Netflix preloaded – supported by what BenQ describes as ‘comprehensive AV connectivity and wireless capabilities’. All projectors also carry a built-in speaker system.
For those looking for reference HT performance both the HT4550i and HT3560 come with a factory calibrated Calibration Report (Delta < 3).
The HT4550i is positioned as the reference home theater projector of BenQ’s new quartet, offering users with dedicated movie rooms 4K resolution, a four-LED DLP lighting system capable of generating 3200 ANSI Lumens of brightness with 100% coverage of both the Rec. 709 and DCI-P3 color spectrums.
For those still looking for reference calibrated HT performance but at a lower cost the HT3560 may meet your needs. This model does not carry a built-in smart system, but BenQ claims it’s capable of covering 100% of the Rec. 709 and 95% of the DCI-P3 spectrum, powered by 2,200 ANSI Lumens of brightness.
Completing BenQ’s new standard throw range is the TK860i. Again loaded with Android TV and preloaded Netflix. This model is designed for use in bright rooms claiming a huge 3,300 ANSI Lumens of light output which is claimed to provide 98% of the Rec. 709 color gamut.
For those looking for a short throw model the new V5000i also comes loaded with Android TV and preloaded Netflix and supports a 2500 lumen RGB Laser with 95% BT.2020 and 98% DCI-P3 CinematicColor. This projector also comes with a free 100” Fresnel soft screen and home installation service.
For UK readers BenQ has also announced three new models for you to; the W4000i, W2710i and TK860i. Upon first inspection these models seem to carry the same technical specifications as those US announced models above, respectively; HT4550i, HT3560i and TK860i. Currently available in the UK are the £100 less expensive versions of the W2710 and TK860 that ship without the Android dongle.
