ATC C4 SUB MK 2 Active Subwoofer – First Look

British HiFi brand, the Acoustic Transducer Company (ATC) has announced their new ATC C4 SUB MK 2 Active Subwoofer system. This new MK 2 design is hand-built at the Stroud-based facilities and features a new proprietary 12-inch SS75-314SC sub-bass driver with optimized motor mechanics and a newly developed 300W Class AB MOSFET amplifier.
This redesigned subwoofer features a driver that takes full advantage of ATC’s signature short-coil/long-gap configuration with a long 30mm magnetic gap, surrounded by a 6-inch/150mm N48M Neodymium magnet. The redesigned motor system features a new spider for improved compliance geometry, high flow motor venting that uses a large, flared vent running through the center of the motor structure that reduces air noise and compression while at the same time improving voice coil cooling, plus a new rubber roll-surround for higher excursion capability.
Powering this new driver is an all-new 300W Class AB MOSFET design that has been optimized to the new drivers requirements. Its connectivity includes; stereo balanced XLR line level inputs, plus stereo balanced buffered XLR line level outputs for daisy chaining. Control and adjustment is quite extensive to include; selectable 4th order Linkwitz-Riley low pass filters, level and gain controls plus polarity and variable phase. Footswitch control is also available that supports sub muting.
Finally, the 70 liter cabinet is manufactured from 1″/25mm thick panels that employ heavy internal bracing. They are hand built and finished at ATC’s cabinet factory, sharing styling with the brand’s ‘Classic’ and ‘Tower’ series loudspeakers, being available in standard; Cherry, Black Ash, Walnut and Oak real-wood veneers, Satin Black and White finishes, or in premium; Rosewood, European Crown Cut Walnut, Burr Magnolia and Pippy Oak real-wood veneers, with the options of high gloss over veneers and black/white piano lacquers also being available, all at extra charges. Other finishes are available to special order.
